2014 Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon Reviews

From the Colchagua Valley

95 Points James Suckling

Wonderful aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and hot stones. Full-bodied, chewy and intense with great depth and intensity. Muscular tannins, from biodynamically grown grapes, best ever? Old vine magic. Needs three to four years to soften.

93 Points Wine Enthusiast

This lusty Cabernet is earthy, jammy and warm on the nose. In the mouth, this is broad and massive, with an undercurrent of firm tannins that provide structure. Deep dark flavors of blackberry, plum and fig finish with strength on a fruit-packed finish. Drink through 2025.

90 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The 2014 Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vines planted in 1920 on granitic soils in the Apalta Valley in Colchagua. It contains 10% Carmenere. Most of the volume fermented in stainless steel tanks, and 20% did it in oak vats. The wine matured in French oak barrels for ten months. In Colchagua, 2014 was less warm than 2015, and this Cabernet seems to have behaved very well this year. It’s quite classical and shows balsamic aromas of camphor and cedar wood with a core of black fruit. The palate shows the consistency of the tannins of the variety, with a good mid palate.

Deep and dense yet agile and fine. Full body, blueberry and black currant character, and a seamless silky finish. Gorgeous pure cabernet sauvignon. Biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

91 Points Wine Enthusiast

Dark spice, rubber, tree bark and herbal black-fruit aromas are congruent. This big tough tannic Cabernet is layered but hard as nails. Flavors of black fruits, chocolate, fig and dark spices finish with toughness and charred oak. Drink through 2024.

90 Points Wine Spectator

Offers mouthfilling richness, with sinewy and concentrated flavors of dried cherry, mint and raspberry, featuring green olive notes. Minerally finish. Drink now through 2018.

90 Points Tasting Panel

Smooth and juicy with ripe plum and cassis; tangy, bright and balanced with depth and finesse.

90 Points Wine Enthusiast

Big, bulky, ripe aromas of cassis and blackberry come with a hint of cedar and spice. This Cab shows a clampy, tannic mouthfeel and loamy, ultraripe flavors of blackberry and cassis. Fudge, mocha and blackberry flavors drive the finish on this ripe wine from a hot vintage.

Aromas of blackberry and cassis are spicy and a touch herbal. A tannic, firm palate suggests that aging will help this along; flavors of blackberry and cassis are lightly herbal, while the finish is dense, fruity, earthy and generous.

This dark red balances racy wild berry and cassis notes with full yet fine tannins, with layers of toasty oak, smoke and baking spice. Polished, with a long, savory aftertaste of spice, cured olive and underbrush.

91 Points Wine Enthusiast

The welcoming blackberry and cassis aromas are friendly and approachable. The mouthfeel is lush, layered and grabby, with serious structure and dark, handsome flavors of black fruit, cassis, tobacco and black olive. Spicy and dry, it shows some mentholated warmth on the finish.

Berry, cassis and cola aromas are standard and clean. The palate is bright, with some chop and bite due to hard tannins and acids. Flavors suggest blackberry, cassis and black cherry, while coffee, toast, mocha and other dark, oak-based flavors control the finish.

89 Points Wine Enthusiast

A lush, extracted Cab with lead pencil, wood shavings, burnt toast and thick black fruit aromas. There’s no shortage of body and boldness, but it is kind of thick and soupy, and also fairly tannic. Flavors of roasted berries, rubber and fig paste are rich but somewhat short on complexity.

88 Points Wine Spectator

Rock-solid, with a juicy core of raspberry and boysenberry fruit laced with briar, sweet spice and toast notes. Fruit pumps out nicely on the finish. Drink now.

Steady more than flashy or exotic. There is no shortage of cassis, berry and plum aromas, and the palate is packed, tannic and brings the full allotment of berry, plum and cassis flavors. Right now it’s a bit rough and tough, but that means it should hold for several more years.
