Best Loire Valley Wines: Rose Wine

2017 Domaine Vincent Delaporte Sancerre Rose

Best Loire Valley Wines: The Red Wines

2015 Charles Joguet Chinon Les Varennes du Grand Clos

Suggested Retail Price $38.00

95 Points Wine & Spirits

This 11.4-acre parcel sustains some of the domaine’s oldest vines, planted in 1962 and ’76 on a gravelly terrace over a limestone slope along the bank of the Vienne River. They produce a wine that seems to explode with mineral tannins, bold and powerful, gracious enough when the bottle is first opened, but best two or three days later. At that point, all the wine’s beauty is on display, its deep fruit, accents of persimmon, and black-pepper-tannic intensity melding into classical franc richness. This should continue to develop for ten years or more.

93 Points Wine Spectator

A bramble- and bay leaf—edged version, with a mix of dark cherry and red currant fruit forming the core. Light singed tobacco and a fresh chalk threads line the finish. Long and refined, showing a lovely tug of earth at the end. Drink now through 2026.

Best Loire Valley Wines: Sparkling

Domaine de Vodanis Vouvray Petillant Brut

Suggested Retail Price $21.00

91 Points Wine Enthusiast

From vineyards around the town of Rochecorbon on the banks of the Loire, this beautifully balanced wine is dry while full of honey and almond flavors. It is cut by the intense acidity of Chenin Blanc, just showing signs of developing toasty flavors. The aftertaste emphasizes green and citrus fruits.

90 Points Wine & Spirits

Perfumed richness infuses this sparkling chenin with scents of almond skin, wool and hints of bruised apple. The bubbles are tight and fine, marrying the toastiness of the lees with the pleasant sweetness of the fruit. For aperitifs, or pike quenelles in a cream sauce.

Best Loire Valley Wines: Desert

2016 Domaine des Baumard Savennieres

Suggested Retail Price $38.00

93 Points Wine Spectator

Piercing and pure, with pear, green apple and green almond notes carried by a sleek, minerally edge. Shows juiciness along the edges and flashes of honeysuckle and bitter almond in the background. Drink now through 2033.
