94 Points James Suckling

A very complex and very composed chardonnay, delivering plenty of yellow grapefruit and white peaches with gently nutty elements. The right mix of fresh acidity and fleshy fruit. Impressive style and grace.

93 Points James Halliday

Richer vintage for the classic Shaw + Smith M3 style but it doesn’t lose shape. Lemon butter and apple juice meets toasty oak, the finish still shaped by grapefruit but it’s softer than in some years. More approachable early and very likeable, it’s a carefully made Hills Chardonnay from a warm year. You can be on my dinner table anytime M3.

93 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The 2016 M3 Chardonnay kicks off with trace aromas of struck match and roasted cashew, then opens into grilled pineapple and peach. It’s medium to full-bodied, providing a generous mid-palate of fruit, then tightens up and refocuses on the citrus-laden finish. It’s one of the best M3 Chards I can recall tasting, showing lovely balance and complexity.

97 Points James Halliday

Pale straw-green; it may be auto-suggestion, but this has great freshness, vibrancy and finesse, the flavours pitched halfway between white peach/stone fruit on the one hand, grapefruit/citrus on the other. Obviously fermented in French oak, but is not obviously oaky.

94 Points James Suckling

A complex and deeply layered chardonnay with peach fruit, citrus and hazelnut. Toasty oak and nectarine too. The palate has hints of almond pastry amid nectarine and grapefruit. Concentrated and assertive, layered, and a driving finish. Drink now.

92 Points Wine Enthusiast

The M3 Chardonnay has evolved into a tight, refined style. It’s medium-bodied and tart, with crisp acids that frame juicy citrus flavors. A subtle note of struck match marks the nose, alongside hints of orange zest.

91 Points Wine Spectator

Strikes a balance between vibrant, crispy pineapple and lemon flavors and a warm, toasty cedar note. Harmonious and intense on the finish.

90 Points Wine & Spirits

A pale, earthy Chardonnay, this is zipped up behind its flinty reduction, needing time in a decanter to show its juicy lemon and lemongrass notes.

2014 Shaw and Smith M3 Chardonnay Reviews

97 Points James Suckling

This is a very attractive and deceptively powerful chardonnay from a high-altitude site (500m) and one that delivers a latent, smoldering depth on the nose. Toasty, hazelnut-like oak breathes up through flinty complexity and a wealth of white peaches, melon, limes and grapefruit. The palate’s super taut, really succulent and powerful, holding this thing tight for start to finish. Electrifying tension to this wine; new heights have been reached. Drink now to 2020+.

91 Points Vinous

Limpid yellow-gold. Fresh nectarine and melon aromas, lifted by a zesty orange pith nuance. Juicy and seamless on the palate, offering subtly sweet honeydew and peach flavors that tighten up and become spicier with aeration. Finishes very long and sappy, featuring lingering hints of sweet butter and smoky lees.

90 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The 2014 Chardonnay M3 Vineyard opens with apricot, melon and pink grapefruit notes. With a buttered toast and cedar laced undercurrent. The medium-bodied palate delivers plenty of expressive fruit with a lovely silken texture, finishing with linering savory notes.
